well that didn't work.

so i was all set to add a new cover song tonight (a really good one, too), and moseyed on over to mixpod to set up the music player and whatnot, annnnd... the "add url" button is gone. meaning that i can't input the urls of the songs i wanted for today's update. meaning, basically, no update.

on the bright side, this isn't failure due to my being lame, this is purely external failure! hurray!

a challenge.

i cannot imagine doing a new post every day. that's insane. who does that?

me, next week.

as a tiny, insignificant personal challenge, starting sunday, there will be a new post, featuring a new song, and two new bands, every day for a week. i can't say what time of the day this will occur, as i am not god, and who REALLY knows where they'll be at a given time each day?

cover #25: breaking the law

song: breaking the law
cover: hellsongs
original: judas priest

comments: so there's two kinds of law-breaking: the violent, kickass kind, in which chainsaws and nunchakus and bouncing off dirty brick walls in an abandoned warehouse come into play; and the non-violent hippy kind, where people sit around chanting and allow the police to swab mace directly into their eyeballs. each situation needs its own song, so here you go.

first song is cover, second is original.

where can you get it?
judas priest - breaking the law
hellsongs - breaking the law

lyrics: there i was completely wasting
out of work and down
all inside it's so frustrating
as i drift from town to town
feel as though nobody cares
if i live or die
so i might as well begin
to put some action in my life

breaking the law, breaking the law
breaking the law, breaking the law
breaking the law, breaking the law
breaking the law, breaking the law

so much for the golden future
i can't even start
i've had every promise broken
there's anger in my heart
you don't know what it's like
you don't have a clue
if you did you'd find yourselves
doing the same thing too

breaking the law, breaking the law
breaking the law, breaking the law
breaking the law, breaking the law
breaking the law, breaking the law

you don't know what it's like

breaking the law, breaking the law
breaking the law, breaking the law
breaking the law, breaking the law
breaking the law, breaking the law

breaking the law, breaking the law
breaking the law, breaking the law
breaking the law, breaking the law
breaking the law, breaking the law

cover #24: gangsta's paradise

song: gangsta's paradise
cover: in fear and faith
original: coolio

comments: yet another in a vast, swirling collection of good songs covered badly by mid-range metal-rock ensembles that use a variation of the plankton theory of success: if you want to sound good, play and scream louder.

first song is cover, second is original.

where can you get it?
coolio - gangsta's paradise
oh shucks, amazon doesn't have gangsta's paradise as covered by in fear and faith. darn.

lyrics: as i walk through the valley of the shadow of death
i take a look at my life and realize there's not much left
cuz i've been blastin and laughin so long that
even my mama thinks that my mind is gone
but i ain't never crossed a man that didn't deserve it
me, be treated like a punk, you know that's unheard of
you better watch how you talkin, and where you walkin
or you and your homies might be lined in chalk
i really hate to trip, but i gotta loc- (hurray for googling lyrics!)
as they grew i see myself in the pistol smoke, fool
i'm the kinda g the little homies wanna be like
on my knees in the night
sayin prayers in the street light

been spending most our lives
living in the gangsta's paradise
been spending most our lives
living in the gangsta's paradise
keep spending most our lives
living in the gangsta's paradise
keep spending most our lives
living in the gangsta's paradise

they got the situation, they got me facin
i can't live a normal life, i was raised by the strip
so i gotta be down with the hood team
too much television watchin got me chasin dreams
i'm an educated fool with money on my mind
got my ten in my hand and a gleam in my eye
i'm a loc'ed (wtf is this exactly?) out gangsta, set-trippin banger
and my homies is down, so don't arouse my anger, fool
death ain't nuthin but a heart beat away
i'm livin life do-or-die-a, what can i say?
i'm twenty-three now, but will i live to see twenty-fo'?
the way things are goin i don't know

tell me why are we
so blind to see
that the ones we hurt
are you and me?

been spending most our lives
living in the gangsta's paradise
been spending most our lives
living in the gangsta's paradise
keep spending most our lives
living in the gangsta's paradise
keep spending most our lives
living in the gangsta's paradise

power and the money
money and the power
minute after minute
hour after hour
everybody's runnin
but half of them ain't lookin
what's goin on in the kitchen
but i dont know what's cookin
they say i gotta learn
but nobody's here to teach me
if they cant understand it
how can they reach me?
i guess they can't, i guess they won't
i guess they front,
that's why i know my life is outta luck, fool

been spending most our lives
living in the gangsta's paradise
been spending most our lives
living in the gangsta's paradise
keep spending most our lives
living in the gangsta's paradise
keep spending most our lives
living in the gangsta's paradise

tell me why are we
so blind to see
that the ones we hurt
are you and me?
tell me why are we
so blind to see
that the ones we hurt
are you and me?

cover #23: i just want to have something to do

song: i just want to have something to do
cover: garbage
original: the ramones

comments: with a couple notable (and irish) exceptions, i never really got into punk--it all sounds the same to me, honestly. this is the only ramones song i actually like, and the double-whammy against it is that garbage's cover still kicks more ass.

first song is cover, second is original.

where can you get it?
the ramones - i just want to have something to do
holy shit, amazon, are you serious? do you REALLY not have garbage's cover of this song? really? i can understand your not having some of the random and obscure shit i glean from the bowels of the internet, but this is garbage. and the ramones. come on.

lyrics: hanging out of second avenue
eating chicken vindaloo
i just want to be with you
i just want to have something to do
tonight, tonight, tonight
tonight, tonight, tonight

hanging out all by myself
cause i don't want to be with anybody else
i just want to be with you
i just want to have something to do
tonight, tonight, tonight
tonight, tonight, tonight

cover #22: come undone

song: come undone
cover: fear the clown
original: duran duran

comments: dude. really? if, for some reason, after listening to their cover, you want to know more about fear the clown, you can read this massively embellished e-peen strokeage.

first song is cover, second is original.

where can you get it?
duran duran - come undone
oh, noes, you can't get the fear the clown version on amazon, darn. oh well.

lyrics: mine
immaculate dream
made breath and skin
i've been waiting for you
signed
with a home tattoo
happy birthday to you
was created for you

can't ever keep from falling apart
at the seams
can't i believe you're taking my heart
to pieces

oh, it'll take a little time
might take a little crime
to come undone, now
we'll try to stay blind
to the hope and fear outside
hey child, stay wilder than the wind
and blow me in to cry

who do you need
who do you love
when you come undone?
who do you need
who do you love
when you come undone?

words
playing me deja vu
like a radio tune
i swear i've heard before
chill
is it something real?
or the magic i'm feeding off your fingers?

can't ever keep from falling apart
at the seams
can i believe you're taking my heart
to pieces

lost, in a snow filled sky
we'll make it alright
to come undone now
we'll try to stay blind
to the hope and fear outside
hey child, stay wilder than the wind
and blow me in to cry

who do you need
who do you love
when you come undone?
who do you need
who do you love
when you come undone?

cover #21: wish

i have become aware of an epic battle raging between nine inch nails fans and linkin park fans over the song "wish". originally performed by nine inch nails on their album broken, it was covered by linkin park in june of 2004 in germany. which means that i'm really slow on the uptake, and that kids on youtube have nothing better to do.

FOR INSTANCE, the highest rated comment on the linkin park video: "360 fans jealous of Linkin park Cause they Rocked with this 1...........unlike the Original

Linkin Park Forever"

seriously, did you see how many periods this person used? this is ultra. serious. business.

annnd the second highest rated comment on the nine inch nails video? "LP rock and they r awesome and there cover is pretty kick ass 2

u should just respect other ppl taste of music and if u don't like LP please don't waste ur time on writing comments about them"

which further proves the super cerealness of the linkin park camp in this battle. they are out for blood, people.

the fans of linkin park have made their views quite clear, but what about the nine inch nails side of the battle?

the highest rated comment on the nine inch nails video: "This song won a grammy and it is the only song ever to win a grammy that contains the phrase "fistfuck" You go Trent!"

ah, the nine inch nails front is using a slightly different tact in this war. rather than bash the opposing side, they're boosting the morale of their own team. isn't that beautiful? that's what they teach you in school, kids.

my take? this isn't actually so much a battle as a one-sided shitfest, with linkin park firmly entrenched in the port-o-potty. which, when you consider the style, talents, time frames, and ages of the respective fan bases, makes perfect sense. i personally like both.

nine inch nails - wish

there's no mp3 download of linkin park's cover of wish, so you'll have to live with the video.

lyrics: this is the first day of my last days
i built it up now i take it apart
climbed up real high now fall down real far
no need for me to stay
the last thing left i just threw it away
i put my faith in god and my trust in you
now there's nothing more fucked up i could do

wish there was something real
wish there was something true
wish there was something real
in this world full of you

i'm the one without a soul
i'm the one with this big fucking hole
no new tale to tell
twenty-six years on my way to hell
gotta listen to your big time
hard line
bad luck
fist fuck
don't think you're having all the fun
you know me, i hate everyone

wish there was something real
wish there was something true
wish there was something real
in this world full of you

i want to but i can't turn back
but i want to
